Three years ago in March of 2009, during a trip to Italy and the French Riviera with a group from school, I made a wish. I threw a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome on my birthday and wished for a girlfriend. I had just turned 18 and had never even had my first kiss, let alone a girlfriend. I was lonely.
It was during this trip I met Paige. I had seen her around school but we never talked. She was a year younger and our lives were very much separate in school, but on this trip she ended up sitting one seat forward and to the right of where me and my friend sat on the bus and we began to talk. Me being incredibly shy, my friend did most of the talking at first but through him I began feeling more comfortable around Paige and her friend and started socializing with them.
She was outgoing, social, and LOVED to make faces. It was in Sienna when i began to fall for her. There was an old bell tower in the heart of the city that overlooks the beautiful town. The stunning view however is not what I remember the most from that day. As another friend and I made our way down from the top on the old, narrow stone stairs we came across Paige and her friend on their way up. As I passed her on the stairs, she looked at me and made one of her faces, I thought it was adorable so i quickly snapped a picture which never fails to make me smile despite being out of focus and only capturing the tail end of it. The fact simply is that I liked the subject.
One night near the end of our trip, we went out for dinner in a restaurant called the African Queen in Cannes, France and my friends all sat down at a table leaving no room for me. The server took me to another table where only Paige and her friend were sitting, and during dinner we talked. Me the shy, quiet kid, was carrying on a conversation with this bubbly, energetic, and beautiful girl and it was her friend who was the quiet one. Paige was smart, funny, interesting and just nice to be around. It was the last straw. I fell for her hard.
After the trip we talked more and more and learned of each others lives and struggles and I finally shared how I felt about her. The conversation didn’t however end as favourably as I had hoped, nor as baldy as I expected. She merely needed time. But it was worth the wait and my wish eventually came true later that year. Although she didn’t end up being my first kiss as I had hoped, I know she’ll be my last. We’re coming up on our third year being a couple and we now live together while going to school. Though we have our arguments, every fight ends in a new solution to a problem and every night ends in a kiss. And now I do everything I can to try to fulfill her every wish to repay her for granting me my biggest one. I love you Paige and I can’t wait to grow old with you and all the adventures we’ll have along the way. Thank you for being the answer to my prayers <3
